Day 5: First day of Art Camp

Today was a much “warmer” day outside, with a high of 37 degrees. Team Alaska started the day out at The Compass to begin setting up for a day full of art camp and ministry. Not long after the team was done setting up, the kids came flooding in.

Today’s camp consisted of three stations. The first station was a gratitude mural, at the second station, kids could create “I am” collages, and the final station, was where the attendees could creat gospel bracelets. This camp had a fabulous turnout of about 50 kids throughout the day! What a blessing to have this many young children and teens seeking to do art and learn about Jesus!

At the first station, the mural was centered gratitude. This gave kids an opportunity to draw something that represented what are grateful for. The mural was a very long roll of paper for the kids to work on each day of the camp to later be displayed at The Compass for all to see. This was a great way to emphasize the importance of looking at the blessings in our lives both big and small. One of the team’s favorite pictures were the drawings of Mrs. Cefola’s dog, Pickles.

At the collage station, had magazines and scrapbook paper to cut and glue to a canvas. In the center of the canvas, kids could cut out a circle which represented the sun, and the center of the sun said “I am”. They then scoured through the magazines to find and cut out words that described themselves or made them happy. Those words were glued to the sun as sun rays.

At the final station, the team helped the kids create gospel bracelets where each bead on the bracelet represents a portion of the gospel. The kids and teens had so much fun making the bracelets, and members of Team Alaska had some meaningful conversations with them about Christ and what each bead represented within the gospel. Kids created bracelets for themselves and even brought many home for their family and friends! The creation of these bracelets helped foster many conversations with kids about Christ’s love for them, a conversation that many of the kids had not yet heard.

During the afternoon portion of the art camp, we were made aware of a need to haul and stack firewood for one of the local family’s heat source. The boys in the team jumped at the opportunity to help fill this very practical need. Our team was able to make short work of this project that would have taken a great deal of time for the family.

Please continue to pray for the next two days of art camp, and that kids and teens will return and additional relationships will be built. Pray for our team, that every opportunity will be seized to have kingdom conversations. Pray for everyone’s health and safety, and for optimal weather conditions.

With the art camp, Ivy Norton came up with a goofy joke to share with everyone:

What does the crafty seal say?
