Brazil
The Mission:
The ENGAGE Brazil team will spend approximately 8 days on a boat traveling along the Amazon River Basin. Ministry opportunities include assisting with medical and eye glass clinics in village communities located along the river, along with evangelizing community members during each stop. Students will sleep on the boat each night, 2 to 3 students to a room.
The quarters are tight on the boat, but more than sufficient for the size of the group. The weather is hot and humid and there is air conditioning within the cabins on the boat. There are cooks who prepare all meals while on the boat and other members of the Amazon Hope Mission group who guide us throughout the journey.
Students will also have some eco tourism experiences while travelling down the river, such as fishing for piranha, pink dolphin encounter, spotlighting for caiman, visiting an indigenous village, among other things.
The Travel:
The group will be leaving from Phoenix Sky Harbor and have 3 flights before arriving in Manaus, Brazil, where the boat we will be travelling on is docked. The total travel time will be approximately 15 hours, not counting time spent in airports between connections. Students will need to have a tourist visa to enter Brazil.
The Accommodations:
Students will be in small staterooms with bunkbeds. There are two to three people to a room. Students will take their own bedding and toiletries. There is air conditioning in the staterooms. The rooms are small, but accommodating. There is a bathroom for each stateroom. There is no hot water for showers.
Breakfast typically consists of eggs, fruit, bread and sausage. Lunch and dinner will have a protein, rice, beans, fruit and typically noodles for the evening meal.
