Today was our first full day in Kenya, and we truly got a taste of what the rest of the week will hold. We woke up to a lovely breakfast, and let me just say—the mango juice here is the real deal! After breakfast, we hopped on the bus, eager to dive into the day ahead.
Our morning started with an orientation at Mission of Hope International (MOHI). We learned about how MOHI began, its mission, and the pillars that guide its work. The impact of this ministry is nothing short of life-changing. The presentation alone moved many of us to tears as we saw how Jesus is working through MOHI to bring hope to communities in need.
One of the most powerful testimonies came from Peter (the man who was sharing the presentation), who shared that MOHI helped lead him to Christ. Now, 20 years later, he continues to serve with them, pouring back into the same community that once poured into him. The work being done here is a true example of being the hands and feet of Jesus.
After orientation, we enjoyed some delicious Kenyan chai and snacks, which the kids devoured in no time! The warm chai and the sense of community made for such a sweet moment.
An Eye-Opening Experience in the Slums:
The next part of the day had a shift, as we walked through the slums with social workers. Nothing could have prepared us for what we saw. Trash, fecal matter, bugs, and thick smoke filled the streets. The smell was strong, and the living conditions were heartbreaking. Families lived in tarp shacks, struggling to survive with so little.
As we entered homes and met with families, we prayed over them and had heartfelt conversations. It was devastating to witness such poverty, yet in the midst of it all, God’s presence was undeniable.
There was a joy among the people. The children ran up to us with bright smiles, eager for hugs and high-fives. Families welcomed us into their homes with kindness, and in an act of true generosity, some even offered to cook for us despite having so little themselves.
He is acquainted with suffering—the Son of Suffering—and yet, in the midst of sadness, we praise Him and trust His sovereignty.
After a full day of meeting students and families, we are now safely back at the guest house. We took time to pray, worship, and process—both together and individually.
Tomorrow is another day to serve, love, and witness God’s glory. We look forward to what He has in store.
