Hoe is je dag?

Our day was spectacular! We were all up very early before the sun had come up so that we could grab a quick sack breakfast, take some Dramamine and head to the port to catch our boat, the Mermaid. Today the trip was extra special because Lucas and all three of his children came with us. Once settled in on the upper deck, most of the kids fell asleep while others chatted as we left the dock passing through the Spanish Waters on our way to visit Klein Curaçao (Little Curaçao). The two hour boat ride was the choppiest we have ever had but we were also rewarded with a huge pod of small dolphins jumping and playing along the way.

As soon as the boat was anchored and the captain gave the go ahead, Mason and Ethan jumped into the water, swam very fast, and secured two large palapas for our group so that we would have shade for the day. The crew of the Mermaid gave us our instructions for the day once we were all tendered to the island, provided a buffet breakfast and then we were free to do what we wanted until lunch time. While it was still early and cooler, the majority of the team hiked to the lighthouse on the middle of the island and then to the ship wreck on the opposite side of the island which is also very rough but beautiful. Since we were out hiking and quite warm when we returned, many of us jumped into the turquoise waters and swam, snorkeled, and played on a floating mat that was anchored to the ocean floor. At 12:30 a huge lunch buffet was set out which included BBQ chicken, ribs, burgers, and rack of lamb. There were four different types of salad, cheese, assorted crudités, French bread with garlic butter, watermelon, and pineapple as well as unlimited coffee, tea, Coke, Sprite, orange drink, and water. Many of the kids were so full they went back to the palapas, laid on their beach chairs, and fell asleep. The rest were either sunbathing or swimming. The boat horn blew at 3:15 signaling the end of an amazing day on this gorgeous, deserted island in the middle of the Caribbean. Once tendered back to the Mermaid, everyone settled in for a much calmer and shorter ride (1 1/2 hr) back to the harbor.

Lucas drove us back to the church and everyone showered and took a brief nap before dinner. Jerseley made CapSalon which is a local favorite and similar to Poutine. Steak fries are covered with a type of sliced polish sausage in gravy, a sliced frikandel, chopped white onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and a white cheese sauce similar to Béchamel. It was so good Jerseley had to make more fries because the kids ate so much. After devotions and debriefing, everyone was asking if they could go to bed. The sun and swimming really zapped their energy! It is currently 9:30 and all the lights are out and I haven’t heard a peep or seen anyone!
