Day 6: The second day of Art Camp

Today was another warm day in Alaska with a high of 35 degrees. It’s crazy to see how our bodies have already begun to adjust to the cooler temperatures!

Today was our second day of art camp and the team was eager to see familiar faces from the day before and see some new ones as well. It was rewarding across the board to see the kids recognize our team, run up to greet them, and say hello! It was clear that after a long day of art camp yesterday, every child in attendance, left feeling loved. It was such an encouragement to Team Alaska to see, in a small way, see fruit in the efforts put forth the day before. In addition to this, we saw growth in our attendance, with over 60 kids coming to participate for the day.

At day 2 of art camp, we continued developing and teaching the kids through the gratitude mural and the gospel bracelets. This group was just as excited to take part in these stations as they were on the first day! For the third station, we changed it up by working on creating a gratitude tree through drawing, cutting and pasting, and writing words of the things they were grateful for. As we worked through the stations, our team did an incredible job reaching out to each and every kid to ensure that they felt seen and loved - no matter how reserved they were. It was so incredible to see how time and time again, these VCS students push themselves outside of their comfort zone to share the hope and love of Christ!

During the second half of our art camp, a group of the Team Alaska guys parted ways to help serve another church in the area. Once again, they were able to knock out this project of moving/cleaning out rooms to prepare for painting in no time at all. The group serving here were so grateful to have the opportunity to bless the church in this very practical and simple way.

After our full day of making connections and serving others in any way we could, we came back to our host church for a couple of hours of rest. For the evening, the team had the opportunity to cook our host church’s youth group, dinner. It was great to spend more time with their youth and join in their service. They even got the opportunity to hear an inspiring message from Mr. Kluth on the eternal impact of Christ in our lives.

Tomorrow will be our final day at the art camp followed by a fun evening swimming (yes I said swimming) at the local indoor rec center. As we look toward tomorrow, pray that the team would make the most of our last bit of time with the kids at the camp. Please continue to also pray for the team’s health and optimal weather conditions as we enter into the final stretch of our trip.
