“Thou shalt love thy neighbor.”
We had an early start this morning so we could get to Marnix school at the beginning of their first period. Kali led devotions covering Matthew 5:43 (partial above) and today we were able to put that into practice by loving on students. Jerseley left breakfast fixings for us so he could go to work this morning. He chauffeurs children and adults around the island similar to what an Uber or Lyft driver would do. Just like at home we had leftovers to finish up so we had odds and ends along with scrambled eggs with ham and clementines. Following breakfast it was time to hop into the van and head to Marnix school to continue teaching PE classes.
This morning we had three sessions of thirty students each ranging in age from 9-11. The sessions today ran for forty minutes each. They played kickball, Four Corners, Rock, Paper, Scissors, Snake, and Head, Shoulders, Knees, Ball. Hot and sweaty after these three groups, the team took a much needed break for forty minutes. After all the time spent in the sun yesterday and then playing hard with the kids, they were already worn out. At ten forty we began three more sessions of classes of thirty students each ranging in age from 7-10 which also ran for forty minutes each. These three groups played Red Light, Green Light, Duck, Duck Goose, Sharks and Minnows, Four Corners, and Rock, Paper, Scissors, Snake. By the end of the sixth round of students, our team was gassed! Completely worn out, we headed back to the Youth Center to change clothes in order to go in to Wilhelmstad for lunch and any souvenir shopping that hadn’t already been done.
Lunch today was at Subway and then the students were free to explore on either side of the bridge (Punda or Otrabanda) for two and a half hours. The bridge that spans the distance between the two areas is a floating bridge and it is iconic. The colorful buildings along the waterfront have been designated as a Unesco World Historic Heritage Site. They are really beautiful and I am certain your kids will bring home photos of both the bridge and the waterfront. When we reconvened at four, it was time for a group photo in front of the new, “I Love Curacao” sign. Lucas picked us up and we went back to the Youth Center.
There were a couple of hours of free time at the Youth Center so the kids were visiting, choosing their photos from their photoshoots, playing ping pong, reading, relaxing, or chatting. It was nice to just stop and relax for a bit before dinner. Dinner tonight was phenomenal and we are so incredibly blessed to have Jerseley! He made London Broil with mushrooms and a light gravy, steamed broccoli, cubed, roasted potatoes, salad, and vanilla custard. All I can say is wow!!
After dinner and clean-up we did our debrief and went over plans for tomorrow. The team is taking turns sitting at Lucas’ computer and choosing their photos from the photoshoot. The pictures are amazing!! Soon it will be time for lights out and well deserved sleep.
God bless you,
Lisa
