Service Day - Marnix School

Yea, He is altogether lovely!

Our morning began bright and early at 6:00 with devotions led by Claire based on this scripture from the Song of Solomon. The devotion was a convicting reminder of how we throw the word love around so casually forgetting there is not a single part of Him upon which love does not fix itself. To know Christ is to truly know what love is and in turn the only way we are able to love others as He loves us.

Following devotions we had an outstanding breakfast of homemade corn beef hash, scrambled eggs, meats, cheese, yogurt, and oranges. Jersley put a smile on all of our faces as usual! At 6:55 it was time to head out to Marnix School to teach PE for the littles.

From 7:30-9:00 the students worked with 60 kids every 30 minutes playing, Sharks and Minnows, Duck, Duck, Goose, Simon Says, and Red Light, Green Light. All of these students were 4, 5, and 6 years old and they had SO much energy!! At 9:00 we took a half hour break to cool off, rehydrate, and re-energize. Recess for the littles was from 9:30 to 10:00 so our team played with many of them during their recess. Around 9:45, the director of the school asked if our students would move over to the upper elementary playground so the team switched gears from hugs, swings, and playground equipment to playing tag with the older students and just talking with them. It was soon 10:00 and time to return to the field to play the same games with the 6 and 7 year olds. There were 60 students in our first half hour session and sixty in the second half hour session. Our schedule got off a bit as some classes were late but everything worked out well and since it was getting much warmer, we were able to have a bit of a water and shade break between the groups. After a plethora of high fives we headed back to the Youth Center to change clothes so we could head to town for lunch and a walking tour of the murals all around Otrabanda.

We went to Plasa Bieu for lunch at Dudu’s Place. The local dishes available today were beef stew, goat stew, mahi mahi, chicken, beefsteak, and red snapper. Sides offered were red kidney beans and rice, rice, mashed potatoes, and fried plantains. The food was delicious and there were many plates that appeared as if they had been licked clean. I believe they worked up quite an appetite! When we finished our meal, Lucas took us on a walking tour to see some of the beautiful murals that were painted by local artists during the Kaya Kaya Street Festival. It was amazing to see the talent of these people on both small and large scales! When the tour was finished, the students went off in groups to explore and do a bit of shopping for an hour. Some of us went to Gio’s for gelato and cappucinos. They had the best gelato I have ever had! So happy to have found a new spot!

On the way back to the Youth Center Lucas stopped at a local grocery store. It is always fun to see what products are the same as the U.S. and all of the different items they offer. A lot of snacks and candy were picked and a few energy drinks as well. Snacks in hand it was time to return to the Youth Center for showers and a short rest before dinner. Tonight Jersley blessed us with an Italian Feast. We had spaghetti bolognese, salad with fresh mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes, garlic bread and homemade tiramisu. It was fabulous!!!!!

Tonight is movie night so we will enjoy all of our snacks as we watch a movie together and then sleep sound after all of our activity today. Bill and I are so proud of the whole team and their the outstanding effort they have all put forth thus far on our projects and activities. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of spending ten days of ministry with your incredible kids!

Bon nochi,
Lisa
