Footy, Roo, and a Spider in the Room

Today was a full day of fellowship and fun with the community here in Brewarrina. We headed into town and spent the day at the park grilling sausages, playing rugby with the locals, and racing the little kids across the field. There was plenty of laughter and friendly competition as everyone joined in. It didn’t take long for the students to fall in love with the game of footy.

After wearing ourselves out at the park, we decided to cool off with a little more rugby, this time at the pool. We spent a few hours swimming, laughing, and talking with the kids from town. It was such a joy to simply spend time together and build friendships.

Later we headed back to the school where we grilled burgers and kabobs for dinner. A few locals joined us for the meal, which made the evening even more special. After dinner we gathered together for devotionals led by Austin and Caleb, taking time to reflect and grow in our faith after a great day together.

Just when we thought the night was beginning to wind down, two local kids ran in with exciting news.. they had just hunted a kangaroo! We followed them to the spot, where a local from Brewarrina showed us how to skin and harvest the roo. Many of our students were fascinated and jumped at the chance to learn and get hands-on experience, while a few others decided they were perfectly happy heading back to the dorms. It was a unique opportunity for our students to experience and appreciate a part of local culture.

Finally, it seemed like it was time to settle in for the night… or so we thought. As some students were heading to bed and a few of us were still chatting, we suddenly heard screams coming from the girls’ room. A giant huntsman spider was crawling across the wall! Austin came to the rescue, flip-flop in hand, and smashed the spider, saving the day. After a few tears and a lot of laughter, the excitement finally settled down and everyone headed off to sleep.

What a day it was in Brewarrina, filled with adventure, laughter, new experiences, and friendships that both our Valley students and the kids from Brewarrina will never forget.
