Today we went back to MOHI’s Baba Dogo school for day 2 of VBS. All the Valley kids were broken up into groups of 5 to lead stations for all the children. The Bible station acted out the story of Jesus Feeding the 5,000 by reading Mark 6:30-44 and dramatizing it. The person playing Jesus would take 5 bread stickers and after blessing it they “multiplied” it by stealthily pulling more stickers out of their pocket to hand out to the children. In the science station, the Valley students lead a science experiment where they would pollute water with iodine which represented sin in our lives then make it turn clear again with bleach to represent Jesus purifying us of our sins. The song and dance group taught all the children motions to songs like: Praise, Father Abraham, Jesus Loves Me, and Every Move I Make. The games station played games like Ring around the Rosie, 4 Corners, and Duck Duck Goose. The sports stations played with balls and jump ropes with the MOHI kids. All the children, both from Valley and from MOHI, had an amazing time today laughing and playing together.
After VBS was finished, we got to meet and celebrate some of the special needs children who attend MOHI before we were able to walk some of the children back to their houses in the slums and meet their parents. This has consistently been a highlight for the Valley kids because it gives them a glimpse into the poverty these children are facing and what everyday life really looks like here. Madison and Hailey met a deaf teenager and were able to use their ASL to communicate with her, making it a very special moment for everyone involved. Another group heard about a family whose children were suffering with a debilitating disease, and the Valley students were able to pray and mourn with that family. Once everyone had returned to the school the older students presented Tenley with cards and posters to celebrate her birthday and sing to her. We then boarded the bus to go back to the Guesthouse, where we were served an authentic Kenyan meal before devotionals. The night ended with an hour of singing and dancing in the rain before bed.
