Day One of VBS at Baba Dogo: A Day of Joy, Sacrifice, and Love

This morning, we arose early, knowing that a full and meaningful day lay ahead. After another delicious breakfast, we boarded the bus and headed to MOHI’s Baba Dogo school.

The moment we arrived, we were met with an unforgettable welcome. The students greeted us with a vibrant dance and kind words. It was the perfect way to begin our first day of VBS.

From there, we dove into our stations—Sing & Dance, Games, Sports, Bible Story, and a Surprise Station. The energy was contagious as the Valley Christian students led each station, pouring their hearts into the activities. The Baba Dogo students were ecstatic, fully engaged in the lessons and fun. Despite the scorching heat and an intense UV index of 15, the love and dedication shown by our students never wavered.

As chaperones, we had the privilege of witnessing something truly beautiful: sacrifice, compassion, and intentionality. Our students served with everything they had, ensuring that every child felt seen and loved. One particularly touching moment was when a young girl looked into my eyes and softly said, “I love you.” It was a simple yet profound reminder of the deep love of Jesus Christ that shines through these children. Jesus knows them, sees them, and loves them beyond measure.

After an incredible day of VBS, we accompanied the students home through the slums, guided by social workers. It was a sobering experience for our team. Many of our Valley students expressed their heartbreak, sharing that the reality was “much worse than I was anticipating.” Yet, amidst the devastation, there was also immense privilege—the privilege of being welcomed into their homes, of walking hand in hand with these children through the paths of their community, and of meeting their families.

As we stepped into their tiny homes, we talked, laughed, prayed, and shared moments of genuine connection. Spending the entire day with these children made this experience even more meaningful, deepening the ways we were able to minister not only to the students but also to their families.

After a long, hot day, we gathered in the evening for pizza, fellowship, and a time of devotion, prayer, worship, and small groups. As we prepare for Day Two of VBS, we are filled with gratitude. Jesus is with us—our hope, our strength, and our peace through it all.
