Day 6 - Recreation Day: The Billy Graham Library. Discovery Place and Cook Out!

Today was Team NC’s final day in Charlotte, and they used it to explore! We started off at The Billy Graham Library. The Library is a ministry that uses the life and mission of faith giant Reverend Billy Graham to continue his “ongoing crusade” of sharing the gospel with all people. Each student was given a press pass detailing the life of a Billy Graham ministry team member such as Ethel Waters, Cliff Barrows, Wilma Barrows, George Beverly Shea, and more. Each student was also given a scavenger hunt card to use to follow along the story of the life and ministry of Graham. “The Billy Graham Library will endeavor to bring inspiration to its guests through the story of a man who used his God-given potential to bring God’s love, strength, hope, and kindness to millions of people around the world.”

While at The Billy Graham Library we were joined by Mrs. Beverly Fryar! Mrs. Fryar is a former VCS teacher who recently moved to Charlotte. A few of the students had Mrs. Fryar in class, and many students had Mr. Fryar as principle at the VCS elementary. Our teachers especially loved this treat to see her!

Following the Library, Mr. Timmer found a local burger joint, Bang Bang Burgers, which had previously been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The students loved the meal, and a few even had the chance to grab a donut from a near by Kripsy Kreme donut vending machine.

The team ventured on to Discovery Place Science for the afternoon. The favorite exhibit of the team was all about the biology and domestication of man’s best friend, dogs! While exploring the interactive exhibits a few students took the time to meet Tank the Tortoise. We did make sure they washed their hands immediately after…

Much to our groups excitement it was then time for the mall! A few hours to find souvenirs and grab some pretzels at Auntie Anne’s was just what we needed to work up appetites for the final stop. The stop everyone had been oh so eagerly awaiting: Cookout! For those who have been to Cookout and for those who have not, Cookout is a one of a kind experience that we’re very sure our students will never forget. A few boys are returning with ideas for an Arizona branch of the franchise!

We ended the day with a devotion lead by Logan C. His leadership this evening was a true blessing to this team and the perfect way to lead into a final debrief. The students spent time in reflection over the last week’s service projects and considered all of the ways they had seen God moving. We discussed the ways God is challenging us in our return to routine and took time to process the trip in whole.
It was a wonderful way to close out a thoroughly overflowing week of service. Our students and leaders have all been affected by the events of the week, and we are so thankful to have been part of it. As we return home, be praying that the hearts of the team members remain soft to the calling of Christ to continue to share the gospel with all people and to serve like Jesus.

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that openly profess His name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:15-16
